Arch pain refers to pain on the underside of your foot between the ball and the heel.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness on bottom of foot
- Burning sensation at the center of the arch of the foot
- Stretching the arch of the foot may increase or decrease pain
Causes
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
- Plantar fibroma
- Tarsometatarsal Arthralgia
- Arthritis
- Direct force trauma
- Ligament or muscle sprain
- Stress fracture
- Over pronation (rolling inward) or flat feet
Treatment
Treatment focus is determined by the underlying cause of pain. Consultation with a doctor is necessary for effective treatment. Surgery may be necessary for severe cases.
- RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
- Over the counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve), as needed
- Stretching exercises
- Over the counter or custom orthotics
- Change or modification of shoes
